Open petition: Exempt people detained under Mental Health Act from energy standing charges

Created by Sharon Powell
Closes on

Require energy suppliers to suspend standing charges on unoccupied homes when the occupier is detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, preventing vulnerable people from building up energy debt while they are unable to live at their property.

People detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 may be unable to return home for weeks or months. Although their homes are unoccupied and little or no energy is used, standing charges continue to accumulate. This can leave vulnerable people facing unnecessary debt on discharge. We believe energy suppliers should be required to suspend standing charges during detention, helping to prevent financial hardship and support recovery.
