Rejected petition: Rule out introducing any household levy, or internet tax to fund the BBC
Rejected on
We call on the UK Government to immediately rule out any plans to replace the TV Licence with a universal levy, internet/broadband surcharge, or council tax addition to fund the BBC, and instead transition the broadcaster to a voluntary subscription model.
Imposing a mandatory fee on household internet to subsidise the BBC forces citizens to pay for services they do not use. Millions have legally opted out of the TV Licence. Internet access is an essential utility for work and education, not a vehicle to prop up a broadcaster facing serious governance concerns. The Government represents the public and must not impose an unavoidable levy. The BBC should encrypt its services and move to an opt-in subscription.
