Open petition: Require food labels to disclose painful procedures done without pain relief
Created by Ashleigh Ettleman
Closes on
Switzerland requires food labels to state when animals underwent painful procedures - such as castration or dehorning - without pain relief. We ask the UK Government to introduce similar mandatory labelling for meat, milk and dairy, so shoppers can make an informed choice.
Switzerland's law covers farming procedures but not slaughter. The UK already tracks stunning methods used at every abattoir through FSA surveys - this data already exists. We ask Government to require it on the label: how an animal was killed, whether it was rendered unconscious first, and whether it received any pain relief - for every method, not just some, so shoppers see the full truth and not part of it.
