Open petition: Change priority for social housing guidance to people living in UK for 10+ years

Created by Hollie Tideswell
Closes on

Change guidance for local authorities on priority for social housing to make people who have lived in the UK for 10+ years eligible for priority allocation of social housing over newer residents with similar needs.

Long-term residents can face homelessness after being evicted from private rented homes. Existing priority for urgent needs should remain.

We believe long-term residents should not face longer waits for social housing when housing is being allocated to people who have lived in the UK for less than 10 years. We are not seeking to remove existing priority for vulnerable people, such as those experiencing domestic abuse or with serious medical needs. This proposal would apply regardless of a person's nationality or country of birth. It is based purely on the length of one’s residency in the UK.
