We call on the UK Government to start negotiations to rejoin the European University Institute Convention to allow UK nationals to study for funded PhDs alongside their peers from the EU, Norway, Switzerland & further afield.

The EUI is a leading intergovernmental post-graduate and post-doctoral research university dedicated to the study of the humanities and social sciences with a focus on the European context. The opportunity for UK students to study there alongside their academic peers has been closed to them since the UK's departure from the Convention in 2022.

In the case that reaccession cannot be achieved, we call on the Government to negotiate the closest association agreement possible, for example through Associate Member State status which is held by Norway and Switzerland and allows students from those countries to undertake funded PhD study at the EUI.
