Open petition: Mandate 2:1 female-to-male ratio for public toilets and require unisex provision

We call on the Government to legislate for “potty parity” by requiring public toilet providers to ensure a 2:1 ratio of female to male toilets when building public toilets. We also call for a requirement to provide unisex toilets in order to take into account the needs of transgender individuals.

We believe this is necessary to ensure the fair provision of toilets in all areas. The Royal Society for Public Health’s report, “Taking the P***: Decline of the Great British Public Toilet” from 2019 says equality of access to toilets is an important factor, particularly for women. We believe a fair toilet ratio would be at least 2:1 in favour of women. The British has historically relied on a 1:1 building standard.
Calls to address the unfairness have led to ‘potty parity’ legislation in parts of the US and Canada.

We also call on the Government to require public toilet providers to provide unisex toilets in order to take into account the needs of transgender individuals.
