Open petition: Give victims the right to view a recent photograph of their convicted offender

Created by Chloe Jean
Closes on

Give victims of serious sexual and violent offences the right to request to privately view a recent photograph of their convicted offender during their custodial sentence, with appropriate safeguards. Victim choice should matter, not only immediate risk or proximity to release.

Victims can lose so much control through crime and the justice process. Some never want to see their offender again; others need to know what they look like. Current decisions can focus on risk management or approaching release. Victims should have greater choice throughout a sentence, including for reassurance and reducing uncertainty. A recent photo could be viewed privately and securely, without providing a copy, with appropriate safeguards.
