Rejected petition: Remove VAT charges from Fuel Duty - End double taxation.
Rejected on
Remove VAT from the Fuel Duty element of petrol and diesel prices. Use powers under section 30(4) of the Value Added Tax Act 1994 to amend Schedule 8 so VAT is no longer charged on the duty element, while Fuel Duty itself remains unchanged.
VAT is charged on the full pump price, including Fuel Duty, meaning motorists pay tax on tax. Removing VAT from the duty element would cut fuel costs for households and businesses and ease transport-driven inflation. The revenue loss could be offset through lower-priority spending, including further reductions in overseas aid, or by reforming the State Pension Triple Lock to make future increases more sustainable.
