Open petition: Require news organisations to give equal coverage for inaccurate reporting
Created by Daria Hass
Closes on
We want the Government to legislate to require news organisations to give equal coverage to correcting materially inaccurate reporting to the original publication or broadcast on their media platform.
Corrections to inaccurate reporting should be presented in a way that gives viewers an equal opportunity to see or hear it. We believe truth in news is vital to a healthy democracy. Inaccurate reporting can reach millions, while corrections may receive far less prominence.
Press freedom should be protected, but we feel that with freedom should come accountability for factual accuracy.
When reporting is found to be materially inaccurate, its correction should be reported and presented to viewers in the same way. Requiring equal coverage for corrections could improve accountability while protecting the freedom of expression.
