Open Require enhanced DBS and barred-list checks for MPs and councillors

Change the law so that holding elected office as an MP or councillor makes a person eligible for, and legally required to undergo, an Enhanced DBS check including checks of both the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists.

MPs and councillors hold positions of public trust and may come into contact with children and adults in vulnerable circumstances. Current law restricts who is eligible for Enhanced DBS and barred-list checks. I want elected office to become a specifically eligible category, with the checks mandatory. I believe this would establish a consistent safeguarding standard for elected representatives and provide an additional safeguard for members of the public who approach them for assistance.
