Open petition: Allow classic car owners to reclaim registration marks from scrapped vehicles
Created by Maks Ociesa
Closes on
Change regulations so the DVLA can reissue and transfer registration marks from scrapped classic cars to running chassis of the same era. This will let automotive enthusiasts legally reclaim and preserve family heritage vehicle identities across the UK.
Once a car is scrapped, the DVLA permanently locks its plate. This stops enthusiasts from preserving family car history. We propose a system where owners pay a £5 online fee to reclaim these frozen marks. Applicants must provide an official change of ownership document or logbook linking to a current or previous address issued within the last 25 years to prevent fraud. This lets the next generation legally rescue family history and protect UK classic car heritage.
