Open petition: Review the impact of persistent parental disengagement
Created by Jessica Keogh stevens
Closes on
Review the impact of persistent parental disengagement on children and primary carers, including isolation, hardship and parental burnout. Consider reforms to parental responsibility and better practical, emotional and early-intervention support for affected families.
When one parent persistently disengages, a child can experience rejection, instability and emotional harm, while the remaining parent carries the financial, practical and emotional burden alone. Without adequate support, isolation, hardship and burnout can affect that parent’s wellbeing and, in some cases, lead to harmful coping mechanisms, further affecting the child. Earlier practical and therapeutic support could help prevent families reaching crisis and protect children’s long-term wellbeing.
