Open petition: Exempt UK on-call firefighters from income tax on their fire service earnings

Created by Jasmine Longhurst
Closes on

We want the Government to change tax policy to make all earnings, allowances, and fees paid to on-call (retained) firefighters completely exempt from income tax.

Many fire and rescue services have reported difficulties recruiting on-call retained firefighters. Some on-call engines are routinely unavailable due to staffing shortages. We believe it is unfair to tax those protecting communities as a secondary job. Retained firefighters often disrupt their primary careers and families. We think taxing this emergency care deters new recruits. Exempting these earnings could boost recruitment, retain vital crew, and keep the public safe.
