Rejected petition: Pause police disciplinary proceedings and introduce emergency safeguards

Rejected on

We have lost another young police officer to suicide. We call on Government to urgently pause disciplinary proceedings, review deaths independently and introduce safeguards to ensure investigations are proportionate, timely and humane. We cannot wait for another officer to die before we act.

We have lost another young police officer to suicide. We call on Government to urgently pause disciplinary proceedings where safe to do so, independently review suicides involving officers under investigation, examine potential failings, pause public misconduct hearings and introduce consistent disciplinary guidelines and mandatory welfare safeguards. Accountability must remain, but it must be proportionate, timely and humane. We cannot wait for another officer to die before acting.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about police disciplinary procedures are a matter for individual police forces, not the UK Government or Parliament.

The Government has also already announced a review of the police accountability system:

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
