Open petition: Review support for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Created by Tiya Currie
Closes on

Review support for children with DLD and protect the future of 1.3 million Children Across the UK. We want the Government to recognise DLD, protect children’s rights and ensure no child is left unheard or unsupported.

Children with DLD can struggle every day in schools to understand language, express themselves, make friends, and feel safe. DLD affects 1 in 14.

We are concerned that families are being forced to fight for basic support and rights, whilst bright capable children with DLD face avoidable barriers to learning, confidence and education.

A review should look at how the following could be implemented:
1. DLD specific specialist inclusion bases in every area.
2. Mandatory DLD training for all school staff.
3. On-site speech and language therapists at schools for genuine support.
4. National awareness and public education and pathways for diagnosis.
5. Protection of tribunal rights to safeguard DLD children being missed in the system.
