Open petition: Legalise pavement cycling where roads are unsafe
Created by Maxine Graham-Cumming
Closes on
On roads where the conditions present a considerable danger, we think cyclists should be allowed to use public pavements, especially on those with higher speed limits, sharp bends, or heavy traffic; this could offer a safer option even though cyclists would have to give way to pedestrians.
Cyclists are currently obliged to use roads that can pose considerable danger from motor vehicles. We believe the law should allow them to use suitable pavements where this offers a safer alternative, provided they travel slowly, give pedestrians priority, give sufficient warning when approaching from behind, and slow down or stop when necessary. This could protect cyclists without undermining pedestrians’ right to use pavements.
