Rejected petition: Make Basic British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness Part of School Education

Rejected on

We want the UK Government to introduce British Sign Language and Deaf awareness as a compulsory part of education in England, beginning at primary school. Every child should have the opportunity to learn basic BSL and develop skills to communicate inclusively with Deaf and hard of hearing people.

British Sign Language (BSL) is a language in its own right, yet many people have little or no knowledge of it. Introducing basic BSL and Deaf awareness in schools would give children an opportunity to develop inclusive communication skills from an early age. This could help reduce communication barriers faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing people in education, employment, healthcare and everyday life. The proposal would focus on age-appropriate BSL rather than fluency.
