Open petition: Ban authoritarian state ownership of football clubs
Created by Alan Mahon
Closes on
Ban authoritarian regimes, and the companies and funds they control, from owning or taking stakes in football clubs. Make this part of the Independent Football Regulator's owners' and directors' test, to prevent regimes seeking to 'sportswash' their image.
Football clubs belong to their fans and communities, not to authoritarian regimes using them to 'sportswash' human rights abuses. Ban these regimes, and the companies, sovereign funds and individuals acting for them, from owning or taking stakes in English clubs. Make this part of the Independent Football Regulator's owners' and directors' test, using an independent measure of authoritarian rule, so no club can be brought. Keep authoritarianism out of our game.
