Rejected petition: Strengthen safequarding laws and improve access to offender information
Rejected on
We call on the UK Government to strengthen safeguarding by making checks and disclosure of relevant offender information faster, improving long-term monitoring of registered sex offenders and domestic abusers, and publishing local statistics to help protect children and families.
Parents and victims of domestic abuse need safeguarding information quickly, not weeks or months later. We want faster checks, stronger long-term monitoring and regular risk reviews for registered sex offenders and domestic abusers. Where identities cannot legally be disclosed, we believe local statistics should show how many registered offenders are in an area. Safeguarding laws must work in practice, protect children and victims, and prevent harm before it happens.
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.
We understand that you are concerned about safeguarding, but we're not exactly sure what you mean by "faster checks, stronger long-term monitoring and regular risk reviews for registered sex offenders and domestic abusers." You could start a new petition calling for a clear specific action. For example, we could accept a petition calling for the introduction of statutory response times for enhanced criminal record certificates, or for the long term tagging of those convicted of sex offences and domestic abuse, if that's something that you'd like to see.
We currently have this petition open which you may wish to sign:
