Open petition: Extend the Riding Establishments Act to cover all commercial horse activity
Created by Claire Nixon
Closes on
We call on the Government to extend the Riding Establishments Act, so anyone running a commercial business providing riding, horse care, equine therapy, instruction, horse loans or other organised activities involving horses must meet appropriate licensing, welfare, safety and competency standards.
Commercial riding establishments under the Act already require licensing from councils, with inspections and welfare standards. However, gaps can exist where businesses provide other equine services, such as horse care, equine-assisted activities, therapy, horse loans, instruction or livery. We call on the Government to extend the legislation and introduce proportionate licensing covering commercial activities involving horses, ensuring consistent welfare, safety, competency and accountability standards.
