Rejected petition: Rename “type 1 diabetes” to “Banting’s Disease”
Rejected on
For the UK Government to work with NHS bodies, medical organisations, and international diabetes organisations to recognise “Banting’s disease” as an alternative name for Type 1 diabetes in honour of Sir Frederick Banting and the discovery of insulin. To help battle misdiagnosis and negative stigma.
A name can save a life. Type 1 is still confused with Type 2, and misdiagnosis can mean insulin is delayed or not given, putting people at risk of life-threatening DKA. NICE specifically warns of this risk. Calling Type 1 “Banting’s” would clearly separate it from Type 2, helping medical professionals recognise that these are different diseases and helping the public understand that Type 1 is not caused by lifestyle. Please support this change and help make Type 1 harder to misunderstand.
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
Medical terminology and clinical classification are matters for organisations such as the NHS, NICE, professional medical bodies and international health organisations rather than the UK Government.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
