Rejected petition: Require a statutory UK response to grave human-rights abuses overseas

Rejected on

Enact a Global Human Rights Response Act requiring assessment of credible reports of widespread or systematic abuses, publication within 60 days, coordinated international action, targeted sanctions, and UK property and investment bans on persons sanctioned or excluded for corruption or such abuses.

The Act should protect universal rights to life, dignity, liberty, equality and peaceful participation. It should require review until abuses cease; reasons, subject to lawful exceptions, for admitting foreign officials sentenced overseas to 12 months or more; and prevent sanctioned or excluded persons using companies, trusts or nominees to own UK property or invest in UK-based ventures worldwide. The Government should seek equivalent action in Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

The UK Government can already introduce sanctions and restrict entry on foreign nationals found to have committed serious crimes abroad.

You can find out more about sanctions here: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/uk-sanctions

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
