Rejected petition: Reopen the UK oil refineries

Rejected on

To consider reopening domestic oil refineries to strengthen energy security, protect industrial jobs. Resulting in greater resilience during international supply disruptions. It can also support skilled employment and wider economic activity in communities with existing energy infrastructure.

The programme should be commercially and environmentally sustainable, with clear assessments of costs, investment requirements, emissions, and long term demand. Where facilities can be safely and economically restored, government support could help unlock private investment and preserve important refining capacity.
A stronger domestic refining base would give the UK greater control over an essential part of its energy supply chain while supporting industrial resilience and regional employment
