Rejected petition: Require more training for GPs on the deprescribing of antidepressants
Rejected on
Over 7 million individuals in the UK take prescribed antidepressants but the lack of proper guidance on tapering off them leads to unnecessary suffering. Research has shown that withdrawal can last weeks, months or even years for some, indicating the need for informed and empathetic medical support.
I'm asking the Department of Health and Social Care to give specialized training to GPs. This should include awareness about the range of withdrawal symptoms, appropriate tapering protocols, and support mechanisms for patients. By signing this petition you will be advocating for the necessary change that can transform the tapering experience for patients, ensuring that it is approached with the empathy it deserves. Together we can encourage the medical community to prioritize patient safety.
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
The General Medical Council (GMC) is the regulator of all medical doctors, physician assistants (PAs) and physician assistants in anaesthesia (PAAs) (still legally known as anaesthesia associates and physician associates) practising in the UK. It sets and enforces the standards all doctors, PAs and PAAs must adhere to. The GMC is independent of Government, directly accountable to Parliament, and is responsible for operational matters concerning the discharge of its statutory duties.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
