Rejected petition: Make neurodiversity training mandatory for all teachers that work with children.

Rejected on

Make comprehensive neurodiversity training mandatory for all teachers and nursery staff, as part of initial teacher training and ongoing professional development, so they can recognise neurodivergent needs, prevent avoidable distress and support children to access education.

Neurodivergent children are often misunderstood in education. Sensory overload, communication difficulties, anxiety and dysregulation can be mistaken for bad behaviour, causing punishment, distress, exclusion and lost education. I've experienced this with my autistic daughter, and believe my son's possible ADHD needs are also being missed. Mandatory training would help staff recognise needs early, prevent escalation and make adjustments so children can feel safe, learn and remain in education.
