Rejected petition: Borderline Personality Disorder

Rejected on

We call for BPD to be removed from the classification of mental illness. Personality disturbance should not automatically be medicalised. Its classification can misdirect limited mental-health resources and contribute to stigma, misdiagnosis and inappropriate care and NHS resources.

This petition calls for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) to be reconsidered as a mental health condition. We believe BPD is a personality disturbance rather than a mental illness and that its current classification can lead to stigma, inappropriate treatment and inefficient use of limited mental-health resources. We are calling for a review of its classification and for alternative, individualised approaches that focus on people's actual needs and circumstances.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Decisions about how Borderline Personality Disorder is classified are made through clinical classification systems and by medical experts.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
