Open petition: Introduce statutory safeguarding checks for users of online dating platforms

Created by Hannah Cahill
Closes on

Introduce legislation requiring regulated dating apps to verify users’ identities and participate in a government-administered Dating Safety Check for serious sexual, domestic abuse, stalking and violent offences, without giving dating companies access to users’ criminal records.

Millions now use dating apps to meet strangers, yet users may have little way of knowing whether someone has a serious history of sexual violence, domestic abuse, stalking or violence. People have been assaulted and killed after meeting through dating apps, and offenders can move between platforms. A government-run Dating Safety Check could add protection while keeping criminal-record data out of private companies' hands and preserving privacy, appeals and rehabilitation.
