Rejected petition: Legislate to require Church Commissioners to prioritises parish fabric repairs

Rejected on

We call on the UK Government and Parliament to introduce legislation requiring the Church Commissioners for England to legally prioritise the physical maintenance, restoration, and security of local parish churches and historic graveyards before paying reparations.

The core historical purpose of the Church of England's central assets—including funds derived from Queen Anne's Bounty—has always been to maintain local church buildings.
The Church Commissioners have pledged £100 million of these endowment funds to establish a separate investment vehicle for reparatory justice. This allocation of funds comes at a time when hundreds of historic, parish churches across the UK are facing a severe funding crisis, critical structural decay, closure and vandalism.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Legislation to require Church Commissioners to prioritises parish fabric repairs
would be legislation by Measure. Draft Measures are introduced to the General Synod on the instruction of the Archbishop's Council or Business Committee.

You can find out about how the General Synod legislates here: https://www.churchofengland.org/about/governance/general-synod/special-agendas/legislative-business

You could start a petition calling for the Government to make more money available for Church repairs, if that's something you would like to see.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
