Open petition: Remove all VAT from hot food

Created by Dan Rogerson
Closes on

Access to food is a human necessity, and it is a fundamental human right recognised under international law. We believe hot food is a lifeline, not a luxury. We think it is unjust for the Government to levy additional charges on our access to hot food.

The Government should remove all VAT on hot food. Data suggests that food outlets in the UK face one of the heaviest tax burdens of any industry, and hot food itself is taxed at a rate of 20%. All taxes compound, & a new study by the British Retail Consortium found that hospitality businesses pay an effective tax rate of 82%. We believe this is extreme.

These taxes translate directly to the price we have to pay to be able to eat a prepared hot meal. In our view, the Government's tax policies are suffocating our access to affordable food and thereby harming our general wellbeing.
