Rejected petition: Require MPs to accept the same military service obligations as other citizens

Rejected on

We call on the Government to introduce legislation ensuring that Members of Parliament and members of the Government who exercise political authority over military action are subject to the same compulsory military service obligations as the citizens they ask to serve.

Decisions to enter a war can impose profound obligations and risks on the public, including compulsory military service. Those who exercise political authority over such decisions should not place themselves outside those obligations. We believe military service, if made compulsory, should be governed by equal citizenship. MPs and Ministers should therefore be subject to the same military obligations as other citizens if compulsory service is introduced.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

There are currently no compulsory military service requirements in the UK nor any plans to introduce them. MPs and members of the Government are therefore currently subject to the same rules as other UK citizens, and so we're not sure what you want the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
