Introduce a funded 14-calendar-day deadline for enhanced DBS checks, including police searches. Require automatic escalation of overdue checks, clear completion estimates and limited exceptions for complex cases, while maintaining full safeguarding checks.

Enhanced DBS checks can take months, leaving schools, childcare providers, Scout and Guide groups, holiday camps and children’s activity businesses struggling to recruit and maintain safe staffing. Delays can mean cancelled activities, lost childcare and lost income for staff. Government should fund DBS and police disclosure teams to deliver thorough checks promptly. Complex cases must receive regular review and updates.
