Open petition: Issue guidance on adaptation of school meals for autistic children

Created by Alexandra Matthews
Closes on

Guidance is required to ensure school menus are adapted for autistic children, whose sensory needs can make many foods difficult to eat. Now many aren’t & as a result parents may have to provide expensive packed lunches every day, creating financial pressure & limiting access to nutritious meals.

Children experience strong reactions to food textures, smells, colours, temperatures, sounds and the way food is presented. Foods that are too soft, crunchy, mixed together or strongly flavoured may feel overwhelming or impossible to eat. This can cause anxiety, distress and even lead to children going hungry. We believe providing a suitable option for children with autism would support children’s health, reduce pressure on families and help every child feel included.
