Open petition: Require social media platforms to show original publication dates on all posts
Created by Marcus Hoenig
Closes on
Old videos, images and articles are sometimes shared as current events, which can mislead the public and fuel division. We want the Government to require social media platforms clearly display original publication dates on all content, including reposts, or state when the original date is unknown.
Outdated footage of protests, conflicts, immigration and political events is often recirculated without clear dates. This can create false impressions & fuelling misinformation. Platforms should display both the earliest verifiable publication date & the date content was reshared. Where the original date cannot be established, this must be clearly stated. This simple transparency requirement could help people distinguish old events from current news without censorship or restrictions on free speech.
