Open petition: Legalise assisted dying with safeguards protected by an End of Life Commission

Created by Dr Richard A Fairburn
Closes on

We call for assisted dying to be legalised in a way which protects frail elderly and does not put them at risk of being coerced. This law should allow those with medical conditions set out in a prescribed list to access assisted dying, and the system should be overseen by a “End of Life Commission”.

The prescribed list of medical conditions that would make someone eligible to access assisted dying should include terminal conditions such as MND and terminal cancer, but not “frailty of old age”. Regulations setting out these conditions should be approved by the Lords as well as the Commons. Assessments of those who want to access assisted dying should be carried out by medical and care professionals. An "End of Life Commission", consisting of experts, should advise on the regulations and on statutory guidance.
