Open petition: Fund an Independent Shoplifting Register to Protect Retailers
Created by Kyrylo Kravchenko
Closes on
Establish an independent, government run shoplifting warning register for England and Wales to help retailers tackle repeat shoplifting, with free reporting for shops. The system should have strong privacy protections and safeguards against incorrect reporting.
Shoplifting affects retailers of all sizes, including small shops. We want a government run register of independently verified warnings to help identify repeat offending. Reports on the register must rely on reliable evidence, with fair appeals and strict privacy safeguards for those added to it. We propose keeping someone found shoplifting for one year for first incidents, and three years for repeat warnings, with extra privacy protections for shoplifters under 18s. The system should be government funded and established through legislation.
