Rejected petition: Raise the Personal Allowance from £12,570 to £18,220
Rejected on
Raise the tax-free Personal Allowance from £12,570 to £18,220. This would align it with the 45.8% rise in the National Minimum Wage since 2020, helping low and middle-income earners keep more of their wages amid the rising cost of living.
In 2020, the National Minimum Wage was £8.72/hour and the Personal Allowance was £12,500. By 2026, minimum wage rose 45.8% to £12.71/hour, but the Personal Allowance has been frozen at £12,570 since 2021 and is set to stay frozen until 2031. If it had grown with minimum wage, it would now be £18,220. Meanwhile rent, energy, food and transport costs have soared. Raising it would let low and middle-income workers keep more of their earnings.
