Open petition: Ban compulsory homework in all primary and secondary schools in England

Created by Craig Taylor
Closes on

We want the Government to ban compulsory homework in all primary and secondary schools in England, including punishments for not completing it. We think schools should provide time and support for required learning during school hours.

We believe reading, revision and independent study at home should be optional. Children spend much of their week at school. We believe evenings and weekends should allow time for family, exercise, hobbies and rest. Pupils who struggle should receive clearer explanations, extra help and time during school hours.

We do not think parents should be expected to act as unpaid teachers. No pupil should face detention, behaviour points or other sanctions for not doing homework. Families who choose to read, revise or study at home should remain free to do so.
