Open petition: Give 16 and 17-year-olds on DLA the choice to remain on DLA until age 18

Created by Ingrid Lucas
Closes on

Allow young people receiving DLA in England and Wales to choose whether to remain on DLA until age 18 or move to PIP from age 16. I want families to have flexibility so the transition to adult disability benefits better reflects the young person’s individual needs and circumstances.

At 16, many disabled young people are still in school, dependent on parents for daily care and going through major education, health and social-care transitions. DLA and PIP use very different tests, and PIP may suit some young people better than others. Scotland already allows young people to remain on Child Disability Payment until 18. We believe families in England and Wales should have the same flexibility and be able to choose when to move to PIP.
