Open petition: Decriminalise possession and consumption of cannabis products in the UK
Created by Nathan Fraser-Chaney
Closes on
We petition the UK Government to decriminalise adult possession of cannabis and THC edibles. Available evidence suggests to us that alcohol causes greater overall harm. We believe personal use should not lead to prison & we should prioritise public health over punishment.
We believe cannabis possession and consumption must be decriminalised to prevent criminal records and imprisonment for personal use. Research published in 2010 in The Lancet argues that alcohol causes greater overall harm than cannabis. Studies of police reforms suggest resources can be redirected towards other offences. We believe police time should focus on serious crime, violence and public safety, while cannabis users receive education and health support rather than criminal punishment, reducing costs and overall social harm.
