Open petition: Abandon plans to allow councils to seize empty private homes after 6 months
Created by SUSAN CAROLE RAYNER
Closes on
The Government plan to reduce the time to six months for councils to use their powers to seize empty private homes and rent them out. We believe this would be a misuse of Empty Dwelling Management Orders. In our view, no one should be allowed to take your property like this.
We believe this extension of current powers needs to be stopped. If you have paid taxes, often including stamp duty, and purchased your home, the Government should have no right to take it from you.
There is a plethora of reasons why a property may be empty and many are empty not through choice; but if council tax is being paid on it then we feel there is no reason to seize a home. We think this is like theft - taking what isn't yours and not paying or compensating for it.
