Open petition: Mandate vital computing history and WWII cryptology in the National Curriculum
Created by Evie Basson
Closes on
We call on the Department for Education to mandate the teaching of the foundational ideas and historical developments of modern computing, as well as the overlooked intellectual warfare of WWII cryptology and codebreaking. Pupils deserve an explanation of the why behind the how of their learning.
We want the Department for Education to update the KS3/KS4 curriculum to include the foundations and history of modern computing, as well as Second World War intelligence operations. Pupils should study the vital contributions to fields of computer science, wartime codebreaking and human rights by key figures such as Alan Turing, Gordon Welchman, Tommy Flowers and Marian Rejewski. These topics fit into existing Computing, History and PSHE statutory units but are not ensured. Make them a must.
