Open petition: Require minoxidil medicines include warnings about toxicity to pets
Created by Amanda Young
Closes on
We want the Government to require all minoxidil-containing medicines sold in the UK to carry prominent warnings about their potentially fatal toxicity to cats and dogs. Warnings should appear on outer packaging, in patient information leaflets and on online product listings.
Minoxidil is widely sold for hair loss, yet many pet owners are unaware it can be fatal to cats and dogs.
Veterinary research confirms serious poisonings from accidental exposure, including contact with treated skin, bedding and spills.
A 2021 study documented 211 exposures and eight cat deaths. Mandatory warnings on packaging, leaflets and online listings could prevent unnecessary suffering and save pets’ lives by ensuring owners understand the dangers. Even tiny amounts are deadly to cats.
