Open petition: Review the balance between religious freedoms & equality laws to protect rights
Created by David Miners
Closes on
We call on the Government to review protections and introduce safeguards so religious beliefs, practices or institutions cannot justify coercion, discrimination or interference with others’ fundamental rights and freedoms.
Everyone must be free to practise, change or leave a religion, or criticise its beliefs and practices, without intimidation, discrimination or coercion.
Religious freedom must be balanced with equality before the law and individual rights. No religious doctrine should justify undermining another person’s autonomy, dignity or legal protections.
We urge the Government to identify gaps in the law, consider further measures and provide preventative safeguards against religiously justified discrimination, coercion and psychological harm, particularly for women, LGBT people and former believers.
Everyone’s rights and freedoms must be protected equally, whether they hold religious beliefs or not.
