Open petition: Make it a legal requirement for shops to provide customer bathroom facilities

Created by Gary William Nicholls
Closes on

I want the Government to introduce legislation requiring all retail shops to provide bathroom facilities for customers, including accessible facilities for disabled people and those with urgent medical conditions such as IBS and Crohn’s disease, with reasonable exemptions where necessary.

People with IBS, Crohn’s disease, disabilities and other medical conditions can experience sudden, urgent bathroom needs. Being refused access can cause severe distress, humiliation and potentially accidents in public. I have personally experienced this despite explaining my disability. No one should face this indignity. I believe shops should be legally required to provide customer bathrooms, with accessible facilities and reasonable exemptions, to protect people’s health, dignity and equality.
