Rejected petition Abolish all subsidised food & drink in House of Parliament food outlets & bars

Stop any form of subsidised food and drink for MPs and guests in the Houses of Parliament. (Retain any subsidy for lower paid centrally employed staff of the House if they currently get it, but not MPs directly employed staff - they would just bring it back to their employers.)

More details

MPs are all paid more than double the median wage and should not need subsidised eating and drinking when there is a cost of living crisis & many working people in the UK have to resort to food banks. When the nurses need better pay why are we spending our money feeding MPs. It sets an enormously bad example of "us and them".

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

The House of Commons Catering service does not provide a subsidised service in the commercial sense of the word. Some venues make a profit, while in other venues the cost of providing the service does exceed the income received in sales due to the irregular hours and unpredictability of parliamentary business. The House of Commons publishes details of the cost of House of Commons catering services: https://www.parliament.uk/site-information/foi/transparency-publications/hoc-transparency-publications/catering-services/transparency-reporting-catering-services/
