Rejected petition Open a UK/French centre in Calais for people who want to claim asylum in the UK.

There are currently 3,000 people in the Jungle Camp who are fleeing war & poverty in the Middle East (including Syria) and East Africa. Some of these people are risking their lives trying to cross the Channel & some (at least 14) have already lost their lives & without action more will die.

As winter approaches, conditions in this camp, which are already bad, will deteriorate. Peter Sutherland UN Special Representative for International Migration, recently visited the camp, & said that a centre should be opened where asylum claims could be assessed & dealt with in a sane & humane fashion. He said "you could set up an immediate system for assessing how many of these people are refugees. This could be done in very short time. This is a violation of the rights of individuals".
