Rejected petition Extend stamp duty tax exemption for Muslims to Christians, Jews, & other faiths

A 5% stamp duty tax is mandatory for house purchases over £250,000. The government's website says "You do not have to pay SDLT or file a return if...you use alternative property financial arrangements, e.g., to comply with Sharia law (1) & (2.) This unfairly discriminates against non -islamics.

More details

Islamics, like Christians & Jews are forbidden from paying interest. This tax avoiding loophole is discrimination in the extreme & should be extended to all faiths. Why should those of one faith legally avoid tax on religious grounds when other faiths forbid it too? There should be one law for everyone irrespective of religion.

Why was this petition rejected?

There’s already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

Muslims are not exempt from stamp duty, although certain property financial arrangements arrangements are exempt from Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Transaction Tax.

We have published the following petition, which you might like to sign:

Abolish stamp duty entirely to reduce the cost of buying a home: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/633795

Abolishing stamp duty would not change the fact that most home buyers use mortgages, where interest is charged on the loan, to purchase a property.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
