Open petition: Ban the use of choke chains and choke leads on dogs
Created by Laura Elizabeth Jones
Closes on
We call on the UK Government to ban the use, sale, and promotion of choke chains, choke leads, and other aversive restraint devices on dogs, due to their proven risks to animal welfare and wellbeing.
Choke chains and choke leads tighten around a dog’s neck and can cause pain, injury, and distress. They may damage the trachea, spine, and neck, and can increase fear, anxiety, and behavioural problems.
Veterinary and canine behaviour experts support humane, reward-based training methods, which are safer and more effective. Harnesses and flat collars provide suitable alternatives without causing harm.
Despite this, choke leads remain legal and widely available. This is inconsistent with modern animal welfare standards and puts many dogs at unnecessary risk.
We ask the Government to introduce legislation to ban these devices and promote humane dog training.
