Rejected petition: Introduce legal accountability for misleading statements by elected officials

We call for legislation requiring elected officials to be held accountable for knowingly misleading the public or Parliament. This should include clear definitions, independent investigation, and proportionate sanctions where deliberate deception is proven.
Public trust depends on honesty and integrity in leadership. Where individuals gain or retain positions of power through misleading statements, confidence in democratic institutions is damaged. Existing mechanisms are inconsistent and often political. A clear, enforceable legal framework would strengthen transparency, deter misconduct, and protect the integrity of public office.
Why was this petition rejected?
