Open petition: Review penalties for shoplifters under 18 years old, consider community orders

Created by Dominykas Savlevicius
Closes on

Shoplifting has a substantial impact to the economy including significant losses for businesses, which can then end up being passed to the end consumer. Shopworkers face abuse and violence which can be daunting. We think penalties for under 18 shoplifters are insufficient and should be reviewed.

In our view, community based orders could be effective as it can allow offenders to build empathy, gain life-skills, and better understand the repercussions of their actions. We urge policymakers to review the current penalty system for shoplifting and consider implementing alternative penalties as standard practice for a more responsible society & approach to crime prevention. This could enable to achieve brighter future and protect our community and our businesses.
